What is Eduroam®
Eduroam® is an abbreviation for Education Roaming. It aims to enable users of member institutions to seamlessly access the network at other educational institutions using 802.1x security standards over a RADIUS-based infrastructure.
Users from member institutions can connect to the network from another member institution (Guest Institution) using the same username and password they use to connect to the network at their own institution (Home Institution). When a user sends a connection request to the eduroam network at the guest institution, the guest institution's authorization server redirects the user to their home institution's authorization server to determine authorization. All these queries are made through an encrypted tunnel between the servers, preventing the username and password from being seen outside the user's home server. In this case, users only need to configure the eduroam wireless network at the guest institution as if they were connecting to their own institution's network.
Eduroam has a federation hierarchy. Currently, there are two confederations in the world: the European eduroam confederation and the Asia-Pacific (APAN) eduroam confederation. Member organizations of eduroam send inquiries to the eduroam federations in their respective countries, and these national federations, in turn, send inquiries to the confederations they belong to. Thanks to this hierarchy, every new federation and organization joining the European eduroam confederation (to which Türkiye belongs) and the APAN confederation can be recognized by all involved parties. You can visit the eduroam website to see the participants in each confederation.
